 Trail Design

The harmonious design of the Cayuga Waterfront Trail owes much to its consistent look in the design of signs, bridges, and trail furnishings, such as benches and bicycle racks.

Benches: Benches are dark blue metal benches custom fabricated by Trystan Site Furnishings. The bench design is based on Trystan's Long Harbour Series Bench; the back and arm of the bench have been modified to incorporate the curve of the Waterfront Trail logo.

Bicycle Racks: These are based on the popular "inverted U" bike racks. They have been modified to incorporate the Cayuga Waterfront Trail logo curve, and are manufactured locally by Accufab, Inc.

Trailhead Directions: Consistent design is also a factor at the free-standing directories at the three trailheads: at Cass Park, Inlet Island, and the Farmer's Market.

The kiosk beautifully illustrates the birds that trail users can see from Cass Park's Waterfront Trail. The research team included the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Steve Kress, and Dave Nutter. The panels were designed by Iron Design and the kiosk fabricated locally by Accufab. This project was funded by the Triad Foundation.

A small demonstration garden of native plants that provide food and shelter for birds.  In your trail travels, notice that long grass meadows are being allowed to grow around the bird garden and elsewhere along the trail. Letting these attractive long grasses grow will not only enhance the habitat for birds and butterflies, but also reduce mowing expenses and greenhouse gas emissions.

Plantings on the Trail

In all seasons, the Cayuga Waterfront Trail offers an interesting and changing landscape. The plantings that flower in Spring and Summer display their eye-catching structure in Fall and Winter. Plantings are designed to take into account what flourishes in the local environment.
